April AWLN President's Message: Purpose
Dear Friends of AWLN,
It’s already April! How did the first four months of this decade fly by so quickly? Every year, every month seems to pass by faster than the last. It’s certainly not time but the pace of change that has sped up. So how do you keep up or make sense of this whirlwind of change. Purpose. It provides focus and helps you sort through the increasing demands and distractions from tweets, youtube and the like for your attention and time! It gives meaning to our actions and our life. I talked about courage in my last month’s message and the brave women that changed our lives. All those courageous women had a clear purpose that drove them to achieve their goals. This brings to mind one courageous woman who led a most purposeful life, blazing a trail for so many, not just women, Dr. Dorothy Height. The headlines read, “Dorothy Height, ‘godmother’ of civil rights, dies at age 98, on April 20, 2010. I had the good fortune to meet her in person five years ago and was totally floored by her vitality, personality, achievements and her continued dedication to the civil rights movement. She is particularly remembered for her work in empowering women. President Obama called her a hero and said “"even in the final weeks of her life -- a time when anyone else would have enjoyed their well-earned rest, Dr. Height continued her fight to make our nation a more open and inclusive place for people of every race, gender, background and faith." Indeed, Dr. Height is a great role model for all of us to lead and live with purpose.
Don't forget to mark your calendar to attend AWLN's next professional development session on the "Twenty First Century Leader and Understanding Your Cultural Values", on July 27, 2010 5:30-6:30pm, for some valuable leadership development tools.
